Dream Within a Dream
Take this kiss upon thy brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow-
You are not wrong to deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?
-Poe
In these days I cannot fake
From the night I do not wake
You were not wrong to imply
I fade away as time passes by
And in time it will claim me-
For night is all I see
In these dreams lies my reality
A sense of lost hope
With the days I cannot cope
For all we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
Who is the stranger I cannot bare
Why are you standing there
As I look into the mirror
I feel my end drawing nearer
What is fiction I cannot grasp
Memories seem to fade too fast
I have no future, I have no past
Living with a tortured soul
From here where do I go
Not even heaven must know-
For all I've seen or seem
Is but a dream within a dream
