Her tender words move straight to his heart,
She does not yet know that she has such an effect upon him,
She tells the boy quickly that she most go
Saying she will call him again in the morning,
His heart aches as he hears her phone clicking and hanging up
Slowly putting down the reciever,
Missing her already.
He moves to his bed
Pulling out a small locked box
Unlocking the box and removing the small articles held within,
Spreading the items over his bed,
Gazing down at them,
A picture catches his eye,
Picking it up as memories flood his mind,
Seeing him and his beautiful best friend at the amusement park
He remembers how he was dripping wet from the ride he just got off,
How he ran ran up to her and hugged her tight as she screamed
He laughs softly to himself as he remembers the way she tried to push him away
And about how they both had a big laugh after he soaked her through.
That was over a year ago...
His attention switches to an empty, heart shaped box.
Smiling he remembers how she gave him this for Valentines Day,
He brings the box to his nose,
Smelling her perfume,
Remembering how it had rubbed off on the box when she held it close to her chest,
In a weak attempt to hide it from him before she gave it up to him.
That seemed like so long ago...
He picks up a scrap of paper,
Opening it up he finds a lock number and combination
The locker they had shared over the school year,
Glancing over at the notebook that was filled with her letters and notes,
Remember how she use to drop him little notes between classes,
How their locker was trached with them at the end of the year,
The smile slowly leaves his face as he see's a handful or rose petals,
Petals that had fallen off the roses she was given,
The roses that her boyfriend had given her,
His trembling fingertips gently touched the silk-like petals,
The churning in his stomach started up again,
Tears filled his eyes as he looked into another picture,
The one not of him and her laughing,
But of her and her boyfriend,
Holding each other close from the recent dance at school.
The image soon became blurred as his tears feel upon the photograph.
Quickly putting all the items back in it's box,
The young boy crawled into bed and started to weep,
Thinking of how the woman he loved,
The only person he trusted,
The girl that had his heart was in someone else's arms,
His hands trembled as he wiped his tears away,
Drifting into a deep sleep,
The only peace that his poor mind can find,
He dreams of him and his beloved finally being one,
About marrying her,
Aout having children with her,
About growing old with her.
It seems so real to his yearning soul...
Awaken by the sudden ring of the telephone,
It is now early Saturday morning,
And he will have to endure the day without her
Until he can once again be in her arms at night.
He answers the phone,
Hearing her soft and tender voice once again
Once again he is made the loving friend,
And nothing more,
He makes a silent vow to himself,
Never will he show his true feelings for her,
He will be there to right any wrongs in her world,
He will always smile that confident smile for her,
But he will never confess his love to her,
He knows he is noth worthy of her heart and soul,
Friendship is her gift to him,
And he will not ask his one love for anymore.
Sometimes a relationship can destroy a friendship,
Sometimes a friendship can destroy a relationship,
Never stop looking for your other half,
For your soul mate may be right under your nose,
In the form of your best friend...
